Our Work
The work of Cardiff YMCA includes both a Young Carers Support Project; “Time 4 Me”, and via our Youth and Community Department, a range of issue based informal education programmes and workshops. During 2010 these programmes delivered to 750+ young people throughout Cardiff, particularly those disadvantaged by learning difficulties; ethnic minority groups; disaffected young people facing exclusion; young carers; young mums; homeless, and young people affected by the criminal justice system.
Our programmes are delivered throughout the City by outreach programmes, in Youth Centres; Schools and Colleges; Alternative Curriculum Education Facilities; at Community First Partnerships, Family Centres and at Statutory and Charitable Organisations. Additionally, each year we have in excess of 10,000 contacts with Cardiff Young People aged between 7 and 25 years, through a range of YMCA activities, which include Theatre; Dancing; Cricket; and Chess.
“Sex, Lies & STI’s”
Young people explore aspects of sex and relationship issues including HIV/AIDS, contraception, and staying safe, provided with relevant information to allow them to make informed choices about their sexual health.
“All the Juicy Bits”
A sex and relationships programme for young people who experience learning difficulties, facilitated in Partnership with Young People from Cardiff Young People First. Motivational & Confidence Workshops providing the tools to allow young people to develop confidence and self-esteem, enabling full participation in education, vocational training or job search programmes.
Young Carers Project — “Time 4 Me”
The project is designed for Children and Young People, aged between 7 and 18 years who have Caring Responsibilities for someone who has a physical or mental illness, a physical or learning disability or a drug or alcohol problem. This caring role can impact on their own health and wellbeing. “Time 4 Me” provides Young Carers with a break from their caring responsibilities with Activities and Trips; plus Information; Someone who will listen and understand; Advocacy (Someone to speak on their behalf), and Support with School.
Global Youth Work
A new and emerging youth work discipline that helps young people make sense of a complex World and take positive action for change. Global Youth Work is based on the principles of informal education. It starts from young peoples’ everyday experiences and aims to develop their understanding of local and global influences on their lives.
C- Card Scheme - (Condom Card)
A weekly drop in Sexual Health programme delivered in Partnership with the Cardiff Local Heath Board, providing young people with information, support, and condoms following individual assessment.
Drug & Alcohol Awareness
Young People focus on understanding the harmful effects both to themselves and others of tobacco; alcohol; solvents, and other legal/ illegal drugs. We highlight any misconceptions concerning substance misuse, and help to develop coping techniques and harm reduction; the Law concerning drugs and Local and National support services available to young people.
